The Bright Blade

(aka Avenger, Skyblade)

Neutral Good

The Bright Blade is the God of combat, war, and other forms of violence. He is the favored deity of many good fighters. Because he is not inherently lawful, he does not attract as many paladins as the Lawful Good gods. He believes in violence as it is used to protect the innocent, stop the guilty, and prove the strength of the faithful. Priests of the Bright Blade make excellent masters-of-arms, or advisors in small villages on dangerous frontiers. Once per day, a priest of the Bright Blade may call upon his god to empower his weapon. For a number of rounds equal to his cleric level, the priest gains a base attack bonus equal to his Cha modifier, complete with extra attacks. While there is no penalty associated with retreating -- the Bright Blade understands the value of tactics -- a priest of the Bright Blade may never refuse a direct challenge to single combat. The priest infallibly knows when the challenge is being made in good faith or not. Turning down a challenge in bad faith (a planned ambush, secret magical trap, etc) carries no penalty, although rewards have been given to a priest who knowingly took up a bad-faith challenge and won nonetheless. Turning down a challenge made in good faith causes a priest to lose access to divine spells until he finds a way to regain his deity's favor. A priest who is challenged by a creature of much higher level (a dragon, for example) may receive a divine benefit of some sort if he faces the challenge without fear.
