Shadow of My Former Self

Episode Number: (TG310)
Original Airdate: 9/2001

After some rest and recuperation, the party heads back to the minotaur room and searches. They find some treasure, but nothing magical or major. They then head to a room to the north, which ends up being a cavern filled with water and mazelike walls. As the party starts to go in, shadows and wraiths attack through the floors. After a difficult and deadly battle, the party withdraws. On their way back to the FountainRoom, they encounter an extraplanar creature who asks for their help.

Analysis:

While Leny appears to be recovering from her death, Tierney does not. He was next to useless in the battle until people's lives were at stake. Leny wasn't operating at full capacity either -- a bit less useful in a battle and not as good at turning. And all of the party was weakened or frail by the end of that fight. Everyone, in fact, was a shadow of their former selves. Which makes for a pretty cute play on words in the title, which gives the DM a cute little thrill. He likes it when meaningful plays on words make their way into the game.

Finally getting a name for the villain who rules the dungeon is a good thing. A CryptLord priest named Reltajoon sounds a bit familiar, but only time will tell...

DMP Speaks:

A much more interesting battle than some of the last stuff. Nobody died, which makes it more intellectually interesting than gut-level terror, but having those guys pop out of the floor makes it a much more seat-of-the-pants type of combat.

It'll be interesting to see if any of the priest-types start preparing spells to keep people from turning into undead. While it might seem pessimistic to burn a spell slot on Gentle Repose, it's a lot easier to raise Aldamar and sadly tell him he's lost a level than it is to tell Devon to roll up a new character because his former character just hit Gryff for 4 points of Constitution drain.

Devon rants: Low AC is going to be the (un)death of Aldamar. It's always troublesome when you're at least part of the reason the DM has to drastically alter the scripted choreography for a certain combat scene because your character is getting the Constitution kicked out of him. Must start listening to fear-inspired gut-instinct reactions. A flame strike into the water room when all that freaky shadow-speak was going on would have probably been lovely. Ah well... you live, you learn. Or almost undie, in this case. Perhaps a paradigm shift for Aldy is in order. He was originally envisioned as a backline support character, anyway.

On the other hand, Aldy has venom immunity now. Wyverns? Ha! I laugh in the face of wyverns! (Looks like I didn't learn anything after all.)
