The Chessboard

There is apparently something important about a chessboard in this world:

• Duke Eledin has a chessboard kept securely guarded in a secret room in the castle.
• When Tierney stole a piece from the Chessboard ("Tierney Through the Looking glass"), he altered time or space or something and jumped into some kind of alternate universe where the Ta'bar'pur were in charge.
• When Tierney got that piece back onto the chessboard in the alternate world, the world went back to normal, indicating that the chessboard is definitely some kind of powerful, fate-affecting artifact.
• Leny had dreams after touching a powerful artifact, where she saw Duke Eledin playing chess with some kind of monster.
• Ambassador Fayel knows about the chessboard, and apparently so does whoever organized the raid on the castle ("Geas Who's Coming to Dinner")
