Ordering a Hakama

To help us make the hakama best suited to your needs, carefully follow these steps and fill out the order form completely.

Specify Classic or Women's.
Please indicate Classic Hakama or Women's Hakama under Description.

Select a fabric.
Select one of our three quality fabrics:

  • 5 oz. Duck Blend
65/35 polyester/cotton. A durable, easy-care fabric, virtually color-fast, holds pleats, with minimal shrinkage..

  • 8 oz. Twill Blend
65/35 polyester/cotton. This fabric offers the same benefits as the duck but is slightly heavier with a diagonal weave.

  • 10 oz. Cotton Duck
100% cotton. A heavy, all-natural fiber, tightly woven, extremely durable. Shrinkage depends on cleaning method.

Choose a color.
All our fabrics come in black or navy.

Select from two koshiita styles.
The Traditional Style Koshiita is used in iaido, kendo aikido, kyudo, and jujitsu. It has a firm yet flexible backing, and may be machine washed and dried. It should be removed for dry-cleaning.

The Aiki Style is our innovative koshiita, a softer style suited to aikido ukemi. The firm multi-stitched layers of fabric contour around your waist.

Choose the Regular or Extended Front Panel.
If your obi slopes toward the front, as in the illustration below, you should order the Regular Front Panel. If the front of your obi remains parallel to the floor, you may need the Extended Front Panel.

Select a size.
To take waist and hip measurements, keep the tape measure straight, not tight. Measure your waist around the narrowest point of your natural waistline and your hips at their fullest point.

If you are still uncertain of your size, include your height and weight, and we will be happy to assist you.

Measure for length.
Over an obi, try on a hakama (an old one or a friend's). Decide how many inches longer or shorter you want your new hakama. Remove the hakama, place it face up, and straighten the pleats. Using a tape measure, measure from the top of the waistband to the bottom of the hem, and add or subtract the appropriate inches.

How to measure hakama with regular front panel
Regular Front Panel

To avoid disappointment and delay, please follow our time-tested instructions for measuring. Do not try to guess based on your inseam. Don't rely on size tags in old hakama, as the hakama may have shrunk. If in doubt, it's better to overestimate slightly, since the hakama can easily be shortened 1" by folding the hem up one turn. With duck blend and twill blend fabrics, you can expect 1" to 1 1/2" of gradual shrinkage, so you may want to add on to your length. When ordering 100% cotton duck, we need to know how you plan to clean it so we can add the correct amount for shrinkage. Please tell us if you will machine wash and dry, cold-soak in a tub, or dry clean.

Important.
We will assume that you measured for length on a hakama with a Regular Front Panel. Please let us know if you measured an Extended Front Panel Hakama. We can then make the appropriate adjustments. Please be careful to take an accurate measurement, as we cannot accept returns on hakama that are less than 38".
