The Penumbral Lord is the shadowy ruler of the dark realm of evil and insubstantial threats.
The party has not seen the Penumbral Lord to their knowledge, but they do know that he is dangerous and powerful. He allegedly possessed the souls of Tierney, Sendant, and Arlemis at various points at the end of Season Four and the Beginning of Season Five. (See, "Void Where Prohibited" for more information.)
The Penumbral Lord's true motives are unknown. It is known, however, that he wants a magical box, silver with ebony inlay, from the party, and has given directions on how to find it.
The party discovered that the Penumbral Lord was Em-shil-vish, an ancient king who made a pact with the Older Sister and became a lich. He discovered and tapped into the shadow magicks that the Ta'bar'pur used and turned into the Penumbral Lord.
In Season Six, the Penumbral Lord acquired the magical box which turned out to be the Device of Eclipse and threatened to unleash it on the Northern City unless they turned over the Sebereich. The party traveled there to stop him and was tricked into activating the device. The Penumbral Lord had planned to absorb the shadow energies released by the device, but his plan backfired when the Sky Elves and Twilight Elves intervened and absorbed the shadow energy, becoming true Ta'bar'pur in the process. The Penumbral Lord was destroyed in the event.
The remainder of the Penumbral Lord's essence was found within an obsidian statue in the Penumbral Lord's keep. When Tierney shattered the statue, it released the Penumbral Lord's essence, which entered and possessed the body of Arlemis. Eventually Arlemis regained control of his body, and claims that the Penumbral Lord lies dormant within him, waiting to be used against the Ta'bar'pur.
