Episode Number: (SS101)
Original Airdate: 4/2002
This is the first part of Spell and Silence.
There's only one man currently alive who has gotten past
the traps and guards at Ironpass -- he claimed that he had figured out a
mathematical algorithm that let him predict the apparently random
pattern of guard rotations, trap positions, and arcane warding spells.
He's brilliant, and comfortably on the other side of the sanity fence. He's currently serving a life sentence in Tresk. Tierney, Timus, and Aldea are going to break him out.
Of course, they will have some help. Karilon has found a few people to help
them out: Jaelin, an arcane locksmith, Warri, a very charming individual from
the Southlands, and Nilendas ("Nil"), who specializes in breaking and entering.
Plot Points:
- Karilon has procured a map of the prison at Tresk for the party, as well as some clearance with the personnel there.
- After much planning, it is decided that the party will go as two groups: Aldea, Jaelin, Nilendas, and Warri will waltz in the front door and pretend to be maintenance workers, responsible for "repairing" the various wards, barriers, and such; Timus and Tierney will follow some minutes later as an Important Person and his servant.
- Tresk has quite the security setup, involving golems, lots of magic dampening and detection, and some real live guards too.
- The maintenance team gets some suspicious looks but manages to make it to their first target...but then the ruse falls apart somewhat, and alarms are sounded. General chaos ensues.
- The diplomatic team isn't quite diplomatic enough, and almost gets gassed in a locked room. Fortunately, they turn into gaseous form, slip through the vents, and find their way out. Unfortunately, they find a huge boiling vat of poison, and a few mind flayers.
Unanswered Questions:
- Why did the diplomatic team claim they were Torian Kel and company?
- Why was communication within the maintenance team so piss-poor?
- Does Jaelin have a hidden agenda?
- Why is Nil carrying a holy symbol of the Black Pillar?
Analysis:
- Mind flayers working at Tresk? It does make some sense, given their lawful nature. It probably pays well.
- Being associated with the Black Pillar can come in handy when confronted by Tresk prison guards.
